How to understand your connection IP address
An IP address identifies a network connection or interface. The address shown by a website can differ from the private address shown in your device settings. NetLuma displays the connection address that reaches its hosting server.
Start with these steps
- Open the IP tool on the device and network you want to inspect. No domain or personal details are needed.
- Press Show my IP. The server reads the address of the current connection and reports its IP version.
- Use Copy address if you need the value for a support request. Only share it with a destination you intend to contact.
What the address can tell you
- IPv4 · dotted decimal format
- Usually displayed as four numbers separated by dots. This describes the address format, not the quality or speed of the connection.
- IPv6 · colon-separated format
- Uses hexadecimal groups separated by colons. Some groups may be compressed. Seeing IPv6 is normal on a network that supports it.
- Public or restricted · address category
- A public address is eligible for public internet routing. Private and reserved addresses have other uses; NetLuma’s classification helps explain the value seen by this server.
- VPN or proxy · a different visible address
- The connection may reach NetLuma through a VPN, proxy or hosting CDN. In that case the address seen by the server can belong to that intermediary rather than directly to your device.
What to try next
If you are troubleshooting your own VPN, compare the address before and after connecting. For a device’s local network address, use its network settings. Contact your internet provider if you need help understanding the addresses assigned to your connection.
Know the limits
This tool uses the server connection address and does not trust arbitrary forwarding headers. It does not look up your location, ISP or identity, and an IP address is not an internet speed measurement.
