UNDERSTAND THE RESULT

How to check if a website is down

A page that will not open can have several causes: the website, the particular URL, your network or a rule blocking the request. Start with an HTTP response check, then use the result to choose your next step.

Start with these steps

  1. Enter the domain or exact page URL you want to inspect. A domain without a scheme is checked over HTTPS.
  2. Press Check website. NetLuma sends a bounded request from its hosting server and follows supported HTTP redirects.
  3. Read the final HTTP status, response time and URL together. If only one page fails, compare it with the domain’s homepage.

What the result tells you

200–299 · successful response
The request succeeded from this server. The page can still have broken images, scripts or application features that this check does not inspect.
301 / 302 / 303 / 307 / 308 · redirect
The server points to another URL. Use the redirect checker to inspect each request in the chain.
401 / 403 / 429 · restricted
Authentication, permission rules or a request limit may prevent access. A reachable server with a blocked check is not proof of an outage.
404 · page not found
The exact URL was not found. Check its spelling and compare the homepage before concluding that the whole website is unavailable.
500–599 · server response error
The server responded with an error. The domain was reached, but the page did not return a successful response.
No response · connection incomplete
DNS, a timeout, routing or HTTPS verification may have prevented completion. Test the domain with the DNS and SSL tools for more context.

What to try next

If NetLuma receives a response but your browser does not, try another network and compare the exact same URL. If the error affects your own site, review your hosting dashboard and application logs before changing settings.

Know the limits

This is one observation from one server. The response time measures time to first byte; it is not your internet speed, full page load time or a historical uptime percentage.

GOOD TO KNOW

A little more context.

Does “responding” mean it works for everyone?+

It means the website returned a response to this hosting server. Your device, network or location may see something different. Firewalls can also block automated checks.

What does response time measure?+

Time to first byte: how long this server waits for the first response byte. It is not the full page load time, an internet speed test or an uptime percentage.
